ホテイアオイを多岐に活用
Gift from the river to the land.

　パラグアイ川を流れ下る、無数のホテイアオイ（アグァペ）群。レダ農場では、一昨年よりこのホテイアオイを堆肥作りに利用して、その効果を確認してきました。空洞と養分を豊かに含むホテイアオイは、堆肥材として、土壌改良材として、マルチ材として、すでに農業に欠かせないものとなっています。繁殖力が極めて旺盛な上に、上流から絶え間なく流れて来る、事実上無尽蔵の「天然資源」と言えます。
　アグァペやロウヤシなど、従来は無用であるか、時には邪魔物ですらあった自生植物を、「持続可能な」資源に変える道を私たちは追究し続けます。

ホテイアオイの砕断作業

　A new machine has arrived at Leda Farm. Enpowered by a tractor motor, it cuts grasses into pieces at uncomparable speed and efficiency to human hand. We can use cut pieces of water hyacinth, or aguape, to make compost of better quality and quantity. Combined with other measures in the context of sustainable development, we can turn infertile soil of Chaco to productive bed for growing various plants including bio-fuel source such as jatropha, custor bean, sugar cane, etc.

They come downriver in large or small groups by Northern wind and the stream. Either from close or from far, flowers look charming in translucent bluish purple.
They multiply themselves incredibly fast.
　　
日本のホテイアオイよりも大型です。繁殖力が極めて旺盛な上に、上流から浮島のようになって、次々に漂着します。
涼しげな青紫色の花も大型です。

ホテイアオイを陸に引き上げる

The wind pushes next groups of water hyacinth ashore for us.

ホテイアオイは水に浮いています。手元に引き寄せて、陸に揚げると、さらにずっしり重くなります。
ホテイアオイは水面をびっしりと覆っています。岸辺のホテイアオイを引き上げると、ほどなく風が水上のホテイアオイを押して、岸辺まで埋め尽くしてくれます。

ホテイアオイをトラックに積む
Heaps of water hyacinth on the bank. The carrier vehicles run to and from agricultural fields numerous times every day.
For the workers, use of a long fork and long boots is a must in order to avoid possible snake-bite.

蛇が混じっているといけないので、手づかみはご法度です。

この六月に新規導入した機械です。
投入口に、生のホテイアオイを棒で押し込みます。

A tractor engine enpowers the machine.

トラクターのエンジンが動力源です。

カンナくずに似ていますが、茎や葉や根があるので破片のサイズはさまざまです。繊維は長く、空洞を多く含んでいます。

After one month of naturalizing period, we plan to grow pioneer plants such as beans and sorgum.
　
従来半不毛であった土地を活用する試みです。
ヤシの炭を鋤きこんで土壌改良の効果がありましたが、より簡便に調達できるホテイアオイを鋤き込んで結果を見ます。さらにパイオニア植物として、豆類や雑穀を栽培する予定です。

生のホテイアオイをマルチに使用
Water hyacinth as raw is also useful for covering the agricultural ground.
We are using it in jatropha farm. When dry, the water hyacinth body sticks to the ground to protects young jatropha trees.

生のホテイアオイは、乾きながら地面に張り付きます。
ここでは、ジャトロファの根元に敷いています。

腐葉土の採集
Collecting leaf mold in the forest.
We use it as nursing soil in small plastic pots to grow seedling and sapling.

ポット苗の培養土として使うため、森から腐葉土を取ってきます。

Rich layer of leaf mold is under these frallen leaves.
One of the gifts of the forest.

この落ち葉の下に腐葉土が堆積しています。
森の恵みのひとつです。

Compost needs fresh air at times.
Heat of fermentation keeps the compost depository pretty warm even on cold winter days.

冬の寒々とした日ですが、堆肥場は発酵熱でホカホカです。

干草のマルチ
Hay of unwanted grass is a good resource if cut down before blooming. We use it to cover the agricultural fields.

旺盛に伸びる厄介な雑草も、開花前に刈り取れば、立派な資源です。
第二農場、グリーンマッペ栽培場にて。

ジャトロファの花蕾
Buds of male and female flowers of jatropha.
When open, bees and flies visit for honey.

雄花と雌花とが集合しています。雌花には子房がありますね。
天気の良い日には、ミツバチ、ハナバチ、ハナアブなどが多数訪れます。

ヒマワリのポット苗

In July and August, our wintertime, they are almost like dwarfs.

緑肥として使います。
南半球は冬です。

冬のヒマワリ
In winter, sunflower quickly blooms without growing tall.
We use it as green fertilizer.
Seeds go into the stomachs of little birds in the air; yes, unfortunately.

冬にヒマワリを作ると開花が極端に早く、ミニひまわりのようになります。
種子は小鳥たちが食べてしまいます。残念！

菜園のレタス
Lettuce in the kitchen garden.
Growing too fast to eat up, they are beginning to show usually unseen flowers.

あまりにも成長が旺盛で、食べ切れません。ついに薹（トウ）が立ってしまいました。
ちなみに、レタスはキク科です。

アナホリフクロウ
Burrowing Owl. "Urukurea Chichi" in Guarani.
The husband and wife are guardind their nest underground.
They made this home at the roadside of the Second Farm.

雨が降ったらどうなるか心配です。
第二農場入口付近の、人と車両の往来の激しい農道の端にて。
