パンタナールの不毛と肥沃
"Infertility and Fertility of the Pantanal"

パンタナールの不毛。カチカチの粘土、真っ白に塩が浮き出す農地、半年間続く乾季、いずれも農作には不適とされる。これらに加え、都市圏からの遠隔、交通路の未整備、苛酷な生活環境などは、開拓意欲も投資意欲も呼び起こさない。これらが、「湿ったチャコ」を「見捨てられた地」と呼ばせる理由である。

他方、「パンタナールは肥沃」とは、日本のテレビなどが解説したこともあり、しばしば甚だしい誤解を伴った真実である。それは、パラグアイ川の増水による氾濫原の肥沃であり、「野生の生命にとっての肥沃」なのである。ナイルデルタの肥沃とは条件が異なる。チャコ地方では放牧以外は成り立ってこなかった。

私たちは、昨年の減水季に氾濫原を開拓し、農場としての可能性を追究することにした。トウモロコシ、マンディオカ、ソルゴ、カボチャ、豆類などを植え、ほとんど天作農法に近い形で、生育を観察した。水位の上昇とともに、土は湿り気を増し、雑草や潅木がみるみる背丈を伸ばした。そして幾種かの作物もまた、たくましく育つのを見た。誰も敢えて手をつけなかった「パンタナールの肥沃を活用した農業」への扉が開き始めたのである。

When dry, the soil in Chaco is almost as hard as concrete. Salt is often visible on the surface of the ground. Little rain falls during the dry season, lasting almost for half the year. Far distant from towns, with ways of transport too much limited, this land is commonly referred to as "abandoned land."

While most habitable ground is infertile, the flood basin is fertile and rich with wildlife. Last year, we made roads to pantanal area, that is, seasonal swamp. There we opened a new farm which we can use for agriculture during the six months of the year. Now we find the door is half-open to "fertile Chaco."

		トウモロコシの収穫 We go by boat to harvest crops in the pantanal. 豊水季が始まると、ボートで収穫に行きます。
		おいしいトウモロコシ When fresh, corns are soft and sweet enough for human beings. 収穫直後は粒が柔らかく、ハーモニカでいただきます。大人気。

		第一農場に給水パイプ A new wateringpipe for the kitchengarden. We expect increase of fresh vegetables for our own kitchen. 第一農場はレダ基地の居住部にあり、開拓初期から土壌改良を続けてきました。現在は菜園として愛用されています。
		第一農場のズッキーニ Squash growing comfortably in the kitchen garden. ウリ科の野菜はよくできますが、とりわけカボチャ類は生育が旺盛です。
		第一農場のトマト Tomato growing inside the net to prevent birds and bugs, after pollination. 受粉後、鳥と虫を防ぐためにネットで覆っています。
		果樹園のバンレイシ Sugar apple. Its original home is in South America. 南米原産で、その形から釈迦頭（しゃかとう）とも呼ばれます。いくぶん砂糖をかむような食感があり、中に黒い種がたくさん入っています。スペイン語で、anona blanca del peru.

		果樹園のグレープフルーツ Grapefruits from our orchard. Most birds prefer other kinds of fruit for sweeter taste. 柑橘類は、当地の気候に適しています。鳥たちは、他のもっと甘い果物を狙います。
		果樹園のオレンジ Oranges from our orchard. Along with grapefruit, the fresh juice is one of our our favorites on the dining table. グレープフルーツと並び、新鮮なジュースとなって食卓に上ります。
		アセローラ Acerola. The sour fruit contains rich Vitamin C. Birds seem to have learned they are very sour. アセローラはビタミンCが豊富です。ほぼ年間を通じて実を収穫でき、病虫害にも強くてどなたにもお奨めできます。この頃はこれを食べる鳥も少なくなりました。
		新しいゲート New gates on the roads to the pastral areas.　Never leave them open. 牧畜管理用のゲートです。通る時は自分で開け、通ったらすぐに閉じるのが鉄則です。

		太ったブタ Abundant haevest of crops nourishes pigs and other domestic animals. 作物の豊作で家畜も栄養豊かに育っています。
		ヤギの飼育場を準備 Preparing gronud for coming goats. 牛、羊、豚、に続いて山羊を導入する計画です。
		自家製ヨーグルト Home made yoghurt from our cow milk. 搾りたての牛乳に種のヨーグルトを混ぜ、約40度に保ちます。
		出来上がったヨーグルト Ready to serve. ヨーグルトは健康食です。乳製品を口にしない人々も、ヨーグルトは食べます。

		ブーゲンビリアが丸はだかに Bougainvilleae leaves seriously davoured by multitudes of caterpillars. レダ基地の10年間で、初めての出来事です。
		その犯人 This is the pest. この小さなイモムシが大発生したのでした。
		犯人の親 This species of butterflies came to Leda in December from somewhere. They were extremely many. Now we know what they did." 昨年末にどこからかやって来た蝶の大集団が卵を産んで行きました。なぜか下向きに止まります。
		薬草ミルオンブレ Mil Hombres. They use it as antispasmodic, sedative, antifebrile, disinfectant, etc. つる性の多年草。解熱剤、鎮痛剤、鎮静剤、抗炎症剤などとして用いられる。

		モリンガで泥水を浄化 Moringa powder turns muddy water into clear water. See the settlement at the bottom. モリンガの種子を粉末にして泥水に混ぜると、泥やゴミが沈殿します。
		アメリカレア Rhea americana. They sometimes come to our farm to eat specific grasses. ダチョウよりもやや小ぶりな走鳥類です。グァラニ語で「ニャンドゥ」と言います。
		あえぐ小鳥の母子 It is so hot that the mother bird and her brood cool down their bodies with their bills fully open. あまりの暑さに口を開けて放熱しているのだそうです。
		でかいぞカブトムシ A big beetle. Very powerful. 大きくてすごい力持ち。

Portulaca in the flower garden. They bloom in seven colors. The wild species is only rosy pink.

園芸種のマツバボタンが花壇で咲き始めました。七色あります。
