パンタナールの肥沃。それはエジプトのナイルデルタと似て、大きな河川の絶え間ない働きの賜物です。パラグアイ川は流れが緩やかで、土砂を大量に運んではきませんが、豊水季に水没する草原に豊富な腐葉土を堆積させ、流域の土壌を肥やします。また十年単位で大増水し、広範な面積の土地が冠水し、栄養サイクルがリセットされます。日本の自然とは異なり、増水も減水も緩慢であり、ゆったりとした時間の中で、大小のリズムが繰り返されています。
今年の増水は、1999年に南北米福地開発協会がプエルト・レダを起点に農場を開発し始めて以来、最高レベルで進んでいます。私たちは、養殖池、家畜、諸施設を守るための土木工事や移動作業、近隣先住民への支援態勢つくりなどに、いっそう忙しい日々を送ることになりました。当協会の会長をはじめ現場担当者たちは、いつも以上に元気です。本年の増水現象とその対策に積極的に取り組んでいます。
私たちは、巨大な潜在力を持つパンタナールの悠久の営みの中で、今後も自然本来の力を活用する研究と応用とを、地道に継続して行きます。ご心配くださった皆様に感謝するとともに、いっそう前向きのご支援をお願いいたします。
Fertility of the Pantanal. It is the gift of Rio Paraguay. Every year the rainfall in the upstream area raises water level in the Pantanal and abundant grasses turn to rich mold over the vast flood basin. In every tens of years, the water level goes up very high and resets the cycle of fertility. As the land is flat, and the streams are slow, the water level changes slowly enough for us to take measures for survival and growth.
This year, our staff in Leda Farm is experiencing the highest level of flood since its settlement in Puerto Leda in 1999. They are having a very busy time in order to sustain the fish farm, crops farm, animals, and educational facilities even if the water might reach a destructive level. We are learning a new extent of autonomous challenge and blessing that the nature gives to everyone and everything through everlasting activities of the Pantanal.
As usual, we will keep working to study ways to develop inherent power of the nature of the Pantanal. Thank you very much for your sincere concern and constant support.

パクーの引越し Before the river water arrives at our fish farming pond, we moved all the fish to another farming pond. (May 9) パラグアイ川の増水に備え、養殖池内のパクーを別の池に移動しました。（5月9日） |

養殖パクーの成長 Baby pacu. The fish was １ to 1.5cm long when released into the farming pond on the 28th of January. It is 17cm long and 110g in weight on the average, measured on the 11th of April. (April 11) １月28日に第４の池に放たれた稚魚（当時１～1.5cm）は、平均17cm、110gにまで育ちました。（4月11日撮影） |

ヤムイモ Yam. (species unidentified) Nutritious and tasty. Grated or boiled, it gives us a good time at the table. (April 24) 栄養価の高いヤムイモは、多くの可能性を秘めて研究心をそそります。長芋と同じようにすり下ろして食べるか、煮物、味噌汁に入れても美味しく頂けます。（4月24日撮影） |
