第18回国際協力青年奉仕隊は、去る8月25日に日本国内の集合地でオリエンテーションを受け、翌26日に成田空港を発ちました。一行は、男子8名と女子7名からなる15名の若者たち。もう一名の男子が参加する予定だったのですが、出発直前に事故で負傷したため、完全な治癒を待ち、10月より中期ボランティアとしてレダに行くことになりました。
パラグアイに到着した奉仕隊は、メノー教徒が内陸の不毛地帯に入植して建設した町の一つ、ロマ・プラータをまず訪れ、苦難の連続でも希望を見失うことなく奮闘した先駆者たちの開拓史を学び、彼らが実現した清潔で豊かな町や工場を見学しました。そして翌日、四駆車5台を連ねて、凄まじい砂塵の立つ未舗装の国道を約6時間疾走し、目的地トロパンパ村に入りました。5年前、第13回奉仕隊が学校舎の修繕に汗を流した、人口1000人ほどの貧しい村です。
第18回奉仕隊プロジェクトのメイン活動は、村の空き地に公園を完成すること。子どもたちが安心して楽しく遊べる公園を持つことは、トロパンパの住民たちの長年の夢であり、今年私たちに実現への協力を依頼してきたものです。村には、すべり台のような遊具類は一切なく、中央政府から顧みられることもない辺鄙な片田舎。ここの学校を、州で最も施設の充実した学校にしてあげたいという思いから、このプロジェクトが始まりました。
現地とアスンシオンとレダを駆け回り、今回すべての調査と準備に携わった佐野道准氏は言います。「常に少し危険の伴うブランコはやめて、滑り台、シーソー、階段を昇って集える子供の家、小さな子供たちも乗れる小型のメリーゴーランドのようなものなどを選びました。これらが設置されれば子どもたちがきっと喜ぶだろうと思うと、とても勇気づけられました。そして日本の青年たちがこれに色を着け、壁に絵を描いたり、樹々を植えたりすれば、夢多き立派な公園になると確信しました。」
レダで中期ボランティアとして活動していた4名の先輩ボランティアも、現地にて奉仕隊に加わりました。また、教師、父母、子どもたちなど、小さな村は総出で日本の青年たちとともに汗を流しました。遊具設置の準備段階では天候が不順で、道路が閉鎖されて動けず、数日間はらはらすることはありましたが、その後は順調に進行し、すべてのプログラムを、素晴らしく果たし終えることができました。その経過については、以下の写真とキャプションをご覧ください。
幸い今年も、奉仕隊は怪我人や病人を一切出すことなく、9月14日、元気よく成田空港に帰って来ました。改めて、支援をお寄せくださったすべての皆様に深く感謝いたします。

オリエンテーション Leaving Japan on Aug. 26, the team arrives in Asunción next day midnight. Orientation for the tour by Mr. Michihito Sano early morning in Hotel Palmas del Sol. 未明にアスンシオンに到着。しばらくホテルで休み、現地コーディネーターの佐野氏より、オリエンテーションを受けました。その後、ロマ・プラタに移動。（8月28日） |

開拓史博物館 The team visits the Museum of History of Pioneers located in the Mennonite town of Loma Plata, inland of Paraguay. メノー教徒がチャコ地方に入植・建設した町ロマ・プラタで、その壮絶な開拓史を学び、その後大きなミルク工場を見学しました。（8月29日） |

プレゼントの仕分け Volunteers classify, count, and pack up gifts, mainly clothing and stationery donated by cooperators and supporters in Japan. 日本の救援衣料センターから寄贈された衣類を、種類ごとに数え、袋詰めしました。また文具類とスポーツ用品も再点検。仕分けを行いました。（8月29日） |

トロパンパへ It takes about six hours by 4-wheel-drive pickup trucks running through dense dust on the dirt road from Loma Plata to Toro Pampa. They make a stop every few hours for breathing fresh air. ロマ・プラタからトロパンパ村へ、未舗装の道路を延々と約6時間走りました。乾燥した道では、モウモウと立ち上がるホコリを突っ切って進む忍耐の旅。チームの結束力は高まりました。（8月30日） |

寝室 Toro Pampa School offers them three classrooms to be used as dormitory and office. After moving in, the volunteers enjoy playing with welcoming schoolchildren. 学校の教室の床にビニールシートとマットレスを敷き、即席の寝室に。ここは女子の寝室です。午後、子供たちと楽しく遊びました。（8月30日） |

夕食：男子テーブル First dinner at men's table. The kitchen staff prepare tasty food for the young and hungry volunteers three times every day. Over there are cooking ladies standing by at the canteen counter. 奥の厨房に見える調理スタッフが、これから毎日、美味しい食事を準備してくれます。お陰で、全員元気よく奉仕活動に励むことができました。奥の白髪は佐野氏。（8月30日） |

夕食：女子テーブル First dinner at women's table. Locally produced food cooked by local cooks in their special way is best for getting energy to work there with them. こうして、学校の食堂で、毎日パラグアイ料理をいただきました。当地で生きるのに必要なエネルギーは、当地で産する食材によって生まれます。奥の眼鏡の男性は岩澤氏。（8月30日） |

朝礼 Morning service. Through singing, praying, reading, sharing, briefing the daily schedule and instruction for each job, they get fully ready for whole-hearted service in accordance with the traditional spirit of the project. 毎朝、日の出前から学校の雨天運動場で朝礼を行いました。学習、講話、体験談、抱負、一日の予定、注意点などを共有し、心を整えて一日のプログラムに望みます。（8月31日） |

パラグアイ式朝食 Typical breakfast of Paraguay. Served with hot drink "cocido" that is, Mate simmered in cow milk. 典型的なパラグアイ式朝食。マテ茶をミルクで淹れた、コシードという温かい飲み物、全く甘くないドーナツ、果物少々など。（8月31日） |

歓迎のことば Word of thanks. Many of the children remember the 13th Youth Service volunteers, who gave them hope and joy by fixing their school building, playing, dancing and singing with them. 見つめる生徒たち Bright eyes fixed upon the performance of volunteers. Certainly, this kind of event is one of rare occasions in their lifetime. ゴムタイヤを埋める They bury car tires half under the playground where any part of play equipment may hit the ground. It's for safety of little children. 各遊具の座部は、地面に直接当たらないよう、廃棄されたゴムタイヤを下の地面に埋めます。（8月31日） |

折り紙教室 Origami lesson. It charms boys and girls, younger and elder. A flat sheet of paper turns into a three-dimensional object! It's almost magic. Good for human brain. We never miss Origami when working with children. 男の子にも、女の子にも、大人気の折り紙教室。1枚の紙が立体物に変わる楽しさ。脳の発達にもいいとか。奉仕隊プログラムの定番です。（8月31日） |

汚しません Keep clean. A beautiful job done is often more apparent in the peripherals. The work morality of the volunteers become a good educational material for teachers to use even after they're gone. ペンキ汚れは、残しません。仕事の真の美しさは、作品の周辺にこそ顕わになるもの。奉仕隊の働きぶりは、学校にとって、またとない好教材になりました。（9月1日） |

人気の遊具 Children can't wait till everything is ready. Now, they are beautifully painted by many hands, big and small. They will enjoy this park not only for fun, but also for mental, moral, and physical education. Teachers will take responsibility for maintenance and instruction for use. 子どもの遊具は、単純に楽しいことはもちろんですが、知育、徳育、体育のいずれにも有益です。トロパンパの教師たちが、しっかりと管理と指導をしてくれるでしょう。（9月1日） |

公園に花木を植える To complete the work, they plant nursery trees of bougainvillea. Soon they will grow large and the flowery park will be even more beautiful. 一年中花の咲く、ブーゲンビリアをたくさん植えました。すぐに大きく育って、ますます美しい公園になりそうです。（9月1日） |

Una Familia Bajo Dios It's raining today, but they have a backup program: painting the canteen wall. That will read, "One Family Under God" 今日は雨。予定を変更し、食堂の壁画に「神の下にある一つの家族」と書きました。机を重ね、かなり高い所に立って、描きました。（9月2日） |

かわいい妹たち My little sisters. The youngest girl is going to dance for the volunteers. 私の新しい妹たち、かわいいでしょ！ 右の少女は、この後のお別れ会で、すてきなダンスを見せてくれました。（9月3日） |

お別れの会 Farewell session. White doves seem to really fly to the harmony of many pure voices. 白い鳩が飛び立ちそうですね。生徒たちの合唱の声が、今も耳に残っています。（9月3日） |

かわいいおどり Lovely and elegant dance. The tricolor flag of Paraguay is believed to be inspired by those of France and the Netherlands to show independence and liberty, by the way. パラグアイ国旗と同じ色の衣装を着て、可愛らしく、かつ優雅に踊ってくれました。（9月3日） |

さようならの前に Everybody hates to say good-by. Tears from hearts have been photographed every year since the First Youth Service in 2000. All tears are fresh, of course. お互いに別れがたい気持ちで、心の絆を結びます。このような光景は、第1回奉仕隊以来、ずっとお馴染みのものですが、そのたびに新鮮な涙が出てきます。（9月3日） |

アイワ公園 The park is named "Jardin Aiwa" after the name of the chief supporting group in Japan. Aiwa means "Love and Harmony." この新しい公園は、皆の総意でハルディン・アイワと名付けられました。愛和公園です。（9月3日） |

楽しく遊ぶ子どもたち Do you notice that there's no swing? To avoid accidental injury of little kids, only safer types of play equipment are chosen for this park. People of Toro Pampa will treasure those special gifts. 皆で一緒に汗を流して造った公園。今後は、トロパンパの大人と子どもが大切にし、美しく維持してくれることでしょう。（9月3日） |

一路レダへ Long road to Leda. Dirt again. Cars can run only when it's dry enough. The single wire is a high voltage single-phase power line. Puerto Leda is its endpoint. トロパンパを後に、未舗装の国道を一路レダに向かいます。右手の電柱に張られた電線の終点が、レダ基地です。（9月3日） |

レダ基地公館を訪問 Bright eyes on the steps of Casa de Padres. Arriving in Leda Settlement, the volunteer team visits the facilities and fields of aquiculture, agriculture, pasturage, research, education, recreation, living, public security, etc. レダ基地では、基地内諸施設を巡り、養殖、養豚、農耕、放牧ほかのプロジェクトの現場を見学しました。何度も写真で見て憧れた、美しいレダの公館、その階段で最高の笑顔。（9月4日） |

カピバラの家 Smile at Casa de Carpincho, Capybara House. They are friendly animals to human beings. All the truer if born and grown in Leda. カピバラは人に懐きます。累代飼育されたカピバラはなおさら。ネズミの仲間で、癒し系。（9月4日） |

小橋氏の食品工房を訪問 Mr. Kobashi develops Leda Brand fish products in this laboratory. All visitors can try Kamaboko and sausages of fish paste of pacú, piraña, etc. If any product amazes you, buy some. パクーやピラニアの魚肉で作った、かまぼこやソーセージ、タロイモ食品を開発し、あらゆる訪問者を驚嘆させる小橋氏。みなさんも、ぜひ試食してください。そしてレダブランドのファンになってくださると嬉しい。（9月4日） |

朝日のパラグアイ川 The sun rises over the Brazilian horizon. Volunteers jump after morning exercises upon the bank of the Paraguay. レダ基地では、毎朝日の出の時刻にパラグアイ河畔に行き、リーダーの声に合わせて体操をしました。やがて対岸のブラジルの地平に日が昇ります。ワン、ツー、スリーでジャンプ！（9月5日） |

開墾体験 Short experience of pioneer's life. This young leader of the volunteers used to be a powerful batswoman of her baseball team. See how elegantly the axe swings. She is just exceptional. 最も華麗な技を見せたのが、この女性。昨年の第17回奉仕隊員で、今回の世話役です。日本では、左打ちのホームランバッターだったとか。（9月5日） |

倒すぞ～！ Shout, "Tree falling down!" In tree felling, safety check is an absolute must before you push the tree to fall down. 最後は大きな声で「倒すぞ！」と叫びながら、押し倒します。そのときは、安全確認が絶対不可欠です。（9月5日） |

乗馬体験 Short experience of horse riding. At first, a cowboy leads your horse by the bridle. When you are used to being horseback, quite high though, you may take the reins in your own hands. The horses are smart enough to know your skill level and take you home any way. 初めて馬に乗る人は、牧童に手綱を引いてもらいます。慣れると自ら手綱を取って歩かせ、疾走できるようになります。馬が賢いので、騎乗者の習熟度を感じ取り、適当に戻ってきてくれます。（9月5日） |

タロイモ収穫体験 Short experience of harvesting taro. It has many long and strong roots under the bottom of water. You need strong force to uproot the whole plant. タロイモ水田に入り、タロイモを引き抜きます。タロイモはしっかりと根を張っているので、とても重い。（9月5日） leads |

釣り体験 Short experience of fishing. This is perro de pez, or dogfish. It has a pair of sharp and long fangs in the lower jaw and holes in the upper jaw to accommodate the fangs. It's fun for visitors to fish it, as it jumps up above the river several times when hooked. カショーロ、またはドッグフィッシュと呼ばれる、鋭い牙を持つ猛魚です。ヒットすると、何度も川面をジャンプします。パラグアイ川本流で釣りました。（9月6日） |

きょうの釣果 Today's fishing result. Mostly dogfish, and six piraña. Fair result for the first challenge. たくさんのカショーロと、6匹のピラニアが釣れました。初めてにしては、まずまずの大漁です。（9月6日） |

パクーの追い込み Short experience of harvesting pacú out of the farming pond. Holding a wide net, they drive pacú away to the other bank to finally encircle all fish. 大きな網を持って、養殖池に首まで浸かり、パクーを網の下から逃がさないようにして、対岸に追い込みます。（9月6日） |

パクーの水揚げ Catch of pacú. It is a very energetic species of fish. It keeps jumping and jumping till it's put into a fish container filled with ice-cold water. For the optimum of cost effectiveness, they harvest pacú when it's grown to weigh around 2kg. パクーは凄まじいエネルギーを持つ猛魚です。勢いよく跳ねる魚をすくって、トラックに積み込みます。大体2kgに育った頃が、水揚げの目安。（9月6日） |

パクーの処理 Processing of pacú. Harvested pacú is processed without delay. With a kitchen knife for fish, you open its abdomen, remove the internal organs, wash cleanly and store it in a freezer. You may have difficulty in opening very fresh fish of strong skin, but you'll get used to the job quite soon after practice. 水揚げしたパクーは、すぐに内臓を除去し、きれいに洗って冷凍保存します。強靭な魚体を開くのは、はじめ難しくても、すぐに慣れます。（9月6日） |

エスペランサ村の学校を訪問 Volunteers visit Esperanza, the nearest indigenous community from Leda. As the community celebrates the 34th anniversary of its founding, our volunteers perform a dynamic dance for them. 先住民の村、エスペランザの学校（小中一貫校）は、建設、贈呈、補修、植樹などに、当会が派遣した、幾多の奉仕隊が汗を流しました。この日は村の創立記念日。校庭で、ダイナミックなダンスを披露しました。（9月7日） |

記念植樹 Volunteers plant young trees for commemoration in Leda. Each volunteer writes own name on a white plate and sets it in front of the tree. In five years or so, the tree will be much taller than the volunteer and the protector will be removed. 各隊員がレダ訪問記念の植樹をし、保護柵を建て、自分の名を書いた札を立てました。次に来るときは、どんな高さに成長していることでしょうか？（9月7日） |

貨客船アキダバンが入港 Cargo-passenger boat Aquidaban approaches Puerto Leda. It's time for the Team to leave Leda. Aquidaban comes twice a week: coming upriver and going downriver. The boat is slow, but most reliable as means of all-weather transport. いよいよレダ基地を発つ時が、静かにやって来ました。毎週1回、パラグアイ川の上流と下流を往復する、唯一の船便です。レダからバジェミまで、約18時間の船旅。（9月7日） |

今日の日はさようなら Departure for Asunción. With so many unforgettable experiences, every volunteer is pathetic in farewell on board. They wave to Leda for a long time. They are to get off the boat at Vallemi Port and ride a coach for Asunción. たくさんの思い出を胸に、名残を惜しんで、いつまでも互いに手を振り合っていました。（9月7日） |

アスンシオンの教会を訪問 Volunteers visit the Family Church of Asunción. After the Sunday Service, they had an entertainment time with lunch, songs, and dances. Then, they play football as usual. Then by night bus, they go to Ciudad del Este, at the border with Brazil. 9月8日はバジェミからアスンシオンへの移動日。翌9日、日曜礼拝に参加し、その後、歌やダンスの交流会と、サッカーの親善試合をしました。この日の深夜、長距離バスに乗って、シウダ・デル・エステに移動。（9月9日） |

ブラジル鳥の公園へ Bird Park in Brazil. They are amazed at so many unfamiliar birds right in front of them, in large cages for birds and visitors to be together. There are a few reptiles and butterflies as well. 数々の珍しい鳥を、間近に見たり、触れたりしました。園内で飼育されているほとんどの鳥は、人馴れしています。爬虫類も少しいます。（9月10日） |

イグアスの滝へ Volunteers visit Iguassu Falls, UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Our volunteers are nearly intoxicated by those huge and dynamic waterfalls and a beautiful rainbow. They are wet with the smoke of the powerful falls. 世界自然遺産、イグアスの滝のスケール感に酔いしれそう。滝のしぶきが霧になってびっしょり濡れました。（9月10日） |

abc新聞社を表敬訪問 Volunteers at abc, Asunción-based nationwide daily. One young man and one young woman are interviewed by a reporter lady for their impression of the country, experiences in Toro Pampa, etc. The article appears on its issue of September 19. アスンシオン発行の全国紙、abc新聞社を訪れ、男女各1名が体験談や感想などのインタビューを受けました。記事は同紙9月19日号に掲載されました。（9月11日） |

おみやげショッピング Shopping time. Tomorrow, they will depart for Japan. They go downtown Asunción to look for nice souvenirs for their parents, brothers and sisters, friends, etc. 明日は日本へ旅立つ日。パラグアイのお土産を探しつつ、アスンシオンの中心広場を歩き回りました。（9月11日） |

帰国の途に Time for departure. Finally, they come to the departure lounge of the International Airport of Asunción. Thank you very much Mr. Sano, Mr. Nakai, Mr. Iwasawa, all friends, and all supporters! 言い尽くせない思いを胸に、アスンシオン空港より日本に向かいます。佐野先生、中井先生、岩澤先生、ほかお世話になったすべての皆様、支援者の皆様、ありがとういございました。（9月12日） |
