花、実り、そして風雲、死闘
Flowers and Fruits; then, Disaster and Death Match

実験池で咲いたハスの花　Lotus flower in water pool. 　南半球の熱帯に位置するレダ基地。酷暑の峠を越え、少しずつ気温が下がり、凌ぎやすくなって行く季節です。農牧業のスタッフは、土のにおいと汗のにおいも香しく、地道な研究を続けています。その黙々とした活動の合間に、多くの恵みと感動、試練と苦しみを経験してきました。 　熱帯の大自然は、極端な豊かさと、極端な厳しさとを併せ持ちます。そこに生きる小さな人間が、自然とどう向き合うかにより、大自然から歓迎されることもあれば、拒絶されることもあります。　光と風と水と土が育む「緑」の大地。これを育てるか、切るか、火で焼くか。安直に答えを出せば、多くの生命をも失いかねない、真剣勝負の世界です。   Extreme richness and extreme severeness are common in tropical Nature. It may welcome or refuse us. That depends largely upon how we face Nature. Green is product of complicate interactions of light, wind, water, soil, etc. It can be treasure or torture. Take care? Burn? Thoughtless and heartless action may result in loss of many lives. ハスが初めて開花 Lotus flower. This might be the first flower of lotus open in the history of the Pantanal. 岩国ハスとタイのハスを植えてみました。 パンタナール湿原にハスの花が咲くのは、これが最初で最後かもしれません。 ハスのつぼみとホテイアオイ This one will open early in the following morning. Its color matches well with light purple flowers of aguape (water-hyacinth).. ホテイアオイ（アグァペ）の薄紫色ともよく調和します。レンコンがどうなるかも楽しみでしたが、開花後に撤去しました。 完成した北方への道路 New road open toward North 北方の牧草地に通じる道路が完成し、年間を通じて動物や車両の通行が可能になりました。幅も広く、防火線の役割も担います。景観も素晴らしいので、皆様を二頭立ての馬車でご案内したいほどです。 　 雑草を刈り取る Cutting off wild grasses with "hueise". All plants grow very rapid in the wet season. 雨季には、あらゆる植物がすさまじい勢いで伸びます。 使っているのは、ウェイセ(hueise)という道具で、先端についた両刃を振り子のように振って草を薙ぎます。 ポロトの播種 Planting "poroto" beans. Easy to grow, almost free from pests. この地方では、最も多く栽培されている豆がポロトです。アブラムシや鳥害も比較的少なく、収穫後は緑肥になります。 収穫したポロト Poroto bean is indispensable for Paraguayan cuisine.. とにかくこの地方の郷土料理には欠かせない豆です。いろいろな食べ方があります。 収穫したアルビーア豆 Allubia bean grows fast. Practically free from birds and insects. 成長が速く、病虫害も受けにくい豆です。試みにキントンを作ったら、美味しくできました。 収穫したトウモロコシ Harvest may begin around the fiftieth day of planting seed corn. Tastes sweet at harvest. 播種後、約50日目から収穫できます。収穫直後にスイートコーンとして甘みがあって好評です。保存して家畜の飼料にも使います。 収穫したマンディオカ Non-toxic mandioca. Source of carbohydrates in various parts of the world. 世界中で多くの人々の主要なエネルギー源です。英語圏でキャッサバ、仏語圏でマニョックと呼ばれます。 株は木立性で、根にできるイモを食用にします。これは毒のない種類です。 茹でたマンディオカ Mandioca is usually served after steaming or boiling. サツマイモのように茹でたり蒸したりして食べると、ホクホク、モチモチ感があります。 グァバの熟す季節 Guava trees bear so many fruits that even quite large branches get broken by weight.. 白い美しい花が咲いた後、アボカドよりも小ぶりな実を付けます。 栽培は容易ですが、鳥害に悩まされます。 グァバの果実 Guava fruit tastes somewhat like strawberry. It is rather substantial than juicy and fills your stomach. 果肉はサーモンピンクで、どこかイチゴに似た味がします。 ややこってりした食感で、腹に溜ります。 グレープフルーツ鈴生り Grapefruit is large and heavy. Birds almost never eat of it. グレープフルーツは大きく重いので、枝が折れることもあります。鳥害が、ほとんどありません。 収穫したグレープフルーツ Grapefruit trees are quite common in many households. 作りやすい果物なので、買っても安価ですが、自家消費用に何本か木を植えている家も多くあります。 グレープフルーツの果肉 Grapefruit of "ruby" type. Very juicy and little bitter, you may eat several fruits at a time in hot weather. ルビー系です。苦味が少なく、きわめてジューシーなので、暑い日は一人でいくつでも食べられます。 ゴマの搾油 Mr. Nakata presses sesame seeds to get oil. ゴマもよく成長します。中田所長が小型の搾油機を使ってセサミオイルを作ってみました。 搾ったばかりのゴマ油 With rich fragrance and taste, sesame oil is one of our favorite items on the dining table. 素晴らしい香りと味がします。。 濾過したゴマ油 Sesame oil purified through filtration. これで、見た目もきれいで美味しそうになりました。 ポロトで菓子作り Poroto soaked in water overnight. It is going to be something sweet. 一晩水に浸けたので、膨らんでいます。 よくかき混ぜて Stir constantly while boiling. 弱火から中火で煮ながら、焦げ付かないように、よくかき混ぜます。 できあがり Ready to serve. Contains sugar, salt, etc. according to the chef's sense of gourmet. ケーキ、アンコ、水ヨウカンなどでいかがですか？ 添えてあるのは、ブーゲンビリアです。 野焼きが大延焼 In mid-April, somebody set fire on the ground to clean it up. This is a common practice in Paraguay. This time, fire spread far more than intended. 4月中旬、レダ基地のやや北方、ヌエボ方面で地元民と見られる者が野焼きをし、 これがどんどんと延焼し、開拓が始まって以来の大火災となりました。煙に巻かれ、炎熱にあぶられながらの消火作業は、命がけの防衛戦でした。 速い火の手 In spite of the wet season, it has not rained recent days. Fire devours all green plants. Due to heavy smoke and temperature, it is extremely hard to approach. しばらく雨が降っていなかったので、青い草もたちまち燃え上がります。激しい煙で視界は利きません。猛炎と濃煙の火炎地獄さながら、消火活動も危険に曝されます。 強い風に煽られて Fire and smoke drive animals on land. 放牧中の牛たちを猛焔が襲います。鳥や獣など野生動物たちも急いで逃げます。西方（左）に延焼すると、私たちの放牧地が丸ごと焼けてしまう恐れがあります。寝食を忘れ、防火線を確保するため総出動して放牧地を守りました。 こちらに向かって来る火と煙 Fire and smoke coming toward us. 黄色味を帯びた不気味な煙。対岸からバチバチと火が燃える音が激しく聞こえ、もうもうと立ち昇る煙と共に熱風が川面を超えて迫って来ます。 川を飛び越す火の粉 Fortunately, there is water of "riacho" as defense　line. Little pieces of burning grasses, however, pour upon our houses. Everyone works hard to fight many large and small fires. 無数の燃えかけの草が、リアチョを越えて飛んできます。 全員が火を消し止めるのに必死になって奔走し、闘い抜きました。幸い犠牲者を出すことなく済みましたが、鎮火するまで1週間を超える死闘が繰り広げられました。 工事中の新家屋 Roof completed in April. Wall, windows, doors, and interior work will follow. 屋根ふきが完了しました。これから、壁、窓、内装工事と、続いて行きます。
