Pacu growing in the farming ponds of Puerto Leda

養殖・増殖・放流をめざして
Towards multiplication of fish to "fill the River"

パンタナールの中央を流れるパラグアイ川は、従来豊饒の川として知られ、パクーやスルビなどの大型魚は先住民の貴重な栄養源でもありました。しかし、近年の商業的乱獲によって、所によっては極端にその個体数が減少しています。

私たちは、この世界遺産の本来の豊かさを取り戻すため、昨年より、魚類の養殖を本格的にスタートさせました。まず手がけているのが、生命力が強く、地元民にも人気の高いパクー（Piaractus mesopotamicus）の養殖です。

稚魚から育てた養殖池のパクーも、川から導入した畜養池のパクーも順調に生育を続け、次の産卵期には孵化と増殖が期待されています。

Pacu expected to reach maturity soon in the farming ponds

		マグノ教授 Professor Magno of the University of Asunción invited to our farm in Puerto Leda. パラグアイの養殖研究の第一人者、アスンシオン大学のマグノ教授（40歳）。
		親魚の選定 Professor Magno shows how to examine maturity of fish. 網で集めたパクーの一匹一匹を産卵出来るかどうか丁寧に調べています。
		計量 Measurement of weight and size of the fish is one of the most essential jobs. 魚の計量は、養殖においては重要な作業の一つです。
		注射の実演 Professor Magno demonstrates injection to pacu. マグノ教授が数匹のパクーに注射の実演をして見せています。

		精子 Mail pacu. This one is so matured that semen comes out after a few strokes on the abdomen. 中には、お腹をさすっただけで、立派に精子（お腹から下に白く流れている）が流れ出てくるオス魚も。
		胃袋の中身 Pacu is almost omnivorous. Inside the stomach is much more grass than smaller fish and crabs. パクーの胃を開いてみると、植物を沢山食べていることがよくわかります。
		シロロウヤシの実 Fruits of caranday palm (Copernicia alba). Generally, small round fruits are pacu's favorites. パクーの好物。指の頭くらいの大きさで、これをパクーは丸呑みにします。
		シロロウヤシの木 Caranday palm trees are practically infinite in this area. シロロウヤシは、この地方に自生し、事実上無尽蔵です。

		魚の移動作業 The first pond is evacuated, cleaned, and improved with better facilities. 養殖池1号の清掃と改良のため、魚を移動しました。
		寄生虫の除去 Fish from the river may have parasites, which have to be removed. 畜養魚の場合、皮膚に寄生虫がついていることがあるので、除去します。
		孵化装置の点検 Professor Magno inspects incubators. 孵化させる装置の水温を測るマグノ教授。
		パクーの収穫 Pacu processed before taken for storage in the freezer. 天然ものと同様、すぐに内蔵を取り除き、冷凍保存します。

		豚ランド New Pigland. The new pighouse has 14 rooms including storage and caretakers' bedroom. 餌の倉庫や管理者の部屋も含めて、14の部屋があります。手前に、コンクリートの溝も見えます。
		食欲旺盛 Pigs look most energetic when they eat. 群がって必死に餌のトウモロコシを食べる豚たち。
		食べるのが仕事 When the bell sounds, pigs dash toward the feeding yard. 鐘の合図に反応して豚の群れが疾走して来ます。
		タネ豚 Seed pigs. Those males enjoy more food than other pigs. オスのタネ豚には格別に多くの餌を与えます。

		子豚に耳タグ Tag on the ear of a young pig. A male pig has an odd number; and a female, even. オスは奇数番、メスは偶数番です。
		子豚の家 Weaned piggies stay together in a dormitory for about a month. 乳離れした子豚は一月ほど、集団生活をさせます。
		キクイモ Jerusalem antichoke （Helianthus tuberosus）. Considered as healthy food for both human beings and domestic animals. 繁殖力の旺盛なキクイモ。塊茎を食料、健康食品、飼料として利用できます。
		キクイモの花 Flowers of Jerusalem antichoke demonstrate that they are Helianthus (genus of sunflower). その名の如く、黄色い菊のような花を咲かせます。
