♣ レダ基地を囲む堤防が竣工！ ♣
Construction of embankment completed encircling Puerto Leda!

去る5月9日に始まった、レダ基地の堤防建設工事が完了しました。基地からラタイ牧場を経由して国道方面に通じる道路の一部をかさ上げする工事も完了し、6月20日には建設業者チームがすべての資材と人材を引き上げて行きました。
中田所長は、「基地を囲む堤防の完成によって、パンタナール開発プロジェクトを守る砦としての体裁が整った」と、その喜びと今後の活動への決意を語りました。堤防建設のためにご支援をお寄せくださった皆様に、心より御礼申し上げます。
この堤防工事は、水位があまり上がっていない時期で、そして降水量が比較的少ない時期を見計らって行わなければならず、昨年よりその工事の機会を待ち続けて来ました。そして本年5月8日のパクー稚魚放流式典と合わせるようにやって来た工事の好機を捉え、24時間体制で工事を開始。途中雨で一週間の中断があったものの、水位や気象などの自然条件に恵まれ、工事は予想以上に順調な進捗を見ました。そして竣工直後から再び大雨が続いていますが、これを見ても堤防建設工事を短期間に完了し得たことは、奇跡に近かったと言えるでしょう。
現在、堤防の法面を補強するための芝草を張る作業と、基地内における排水溝の整備工事をしています。芝は堤防を風雨から保護し、排水機構は堤防の内側に降った雨水を堤防外に適切に排出するために不可欠のインフラです。
洪水対策としての堤防が完成した今、レダ基地の恒久的インフラの整備をはじめ、さらなる新たな課題に向けてたゆまない挑戦が続いています。皆様より、これからも変わらないご支援をいただけますよう、懇切にお願い致します。
Thanks to God and our precious supporters, the construction of the embankment to encircle Puerto Leda was completed in mid-June. Now, Puerto Leda looks like a fortified base to guard the front line of the Pantanal Project from slow but destructive flood of the Paraguay River, which comes up occasionally as in recent years.
The civil work had to be finished within a much limited period of time while the water level was enough low and rainfall was not too great. A chance came to us in early May and the busy but well-experienced Mennonite construction troop worked very hard 24 hours a day and seven days a week. They did a good job and left us on the 20th of June.
Now, our project staff is busy improving the whole infrastructure of the fortified base. They are empowering the drainage system to maintain the ground inside the embankment adequately dry even in the rain seasons to come. Patches of green grass are planted on the slopes of the embankment so that it may stay solid enduring decades of heavy rainfall and strong wind of the Pantanal.
